ArcelorMittal (

signed
a letter of intent with the governments of Belgium and Flanders, for a €1.1 billion ($1.28 billion USD) project to build a 2.5 million-tonne direct reduced iron (DRI) plant at its site in Gent, and two new electric furnaces. This investment, according to the press release, “will result in a reduction of around three million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year,” by 2030, and makes up part of the company’s transition to net-zero steelmaking.
Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (

entered
into an agreement with Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd. (
NYSE:KL
) to combine in a merger of equals under the name “Agnico Eagle Mines Limited”. According to the press release, this merger “will establish the new Agnico Eagle as the gold industry’s highest-quality senior producer, with the lowest unit costs, highest margins, most favourable risk profile and industry-leading best practices in key areas of environmental, social and governance.” Sean Boyd, Agnico Eagle’s CEO, explained:
“Kirkland Lake is an excellent cultural fit with Agnico Eagle, and we look forward to working together to further grow our business through exploration, mine development and optimization of our high-quality asset base.
